Royal biography

His Majesty Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I (born Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma) is the 13th monarch of Tooro Kingdom. He ascended the ancient throne of the Babiito Dynasty on September 29, 2026, following traditional coronation rites held at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City.
His accession marks a pivotal era for Tooro Kingdom, characterized by a vision that blends traditional cultural preservation with modern socio-economic transformation, youth innovation, and regional self-reliance.

Early Life & Lineage

Born into the royal house of the Babiito clan, King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I traces his direct ancestry back to Omukama Kaboyo Olimi I, who established the independent Tooro Kingdom in 1822.
Growing up in the culturally rich heartlands of Tooro, His Majesty was educated in traditional Babiito customs, clan governance, and the historical duty owed to the people of the Kingdom. Prior to his enthronement, he actively participated in royal council proceedings and community development initiatives across the sub-region.

Professional Career & Public Service

Uniquely equipped for modern leadership, His Majesty built a distinguished career as a media broadcaster, news journalist, and communications executive before taking the throne.
  • Media & Public Engagement: Served as an editor and broadcast journalist across leading national media organizations in Uganda, including the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC).
  • Community Leadership: Directed public communication strategy for various community empowerment platforms, focusing on rural development, agricultural policy, and civic awareness.
  • Clan Affairs: Played an active role in the Babiito Royal Clan Council (Babiito Forum), advising on lineage preservation and cultural heritage.

Accession & Coronation

Following the passing of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, in late August 2026, the Babiito Royal Clan Council and the Tooro Supreme Cultural Council (Rukurato) selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma to assume the throne as the rightful ruler.
On the night of September 28–29, 2026, traditional royal rituals commenced at Rwengoma Palace before culminating in His Majesty’s formal coronation at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City, where he assumed the royal title Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
