TOORO KINGDOM

Tooro Kingdom is among the five Traditional Kingdoms that are situated within the borders of Uganda. The king of the Tooro Kingdom is referred to as Omukama and is called Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The people of the Tooro Kingdom are referred to as Batooro and the language spoken is Rutooro.

Historically the Tooro Kingdom was founded by Omukama Kaboyo Olimi I who was the oldest son of the Omukama of Bunyoro, Nyamutukura Kyebambe III. He succeeded his father and in 1830 established an independent kingdom his own with the Muziizi River forming the border between the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom and the newly established Tooro Kingdom. In 1876 was absorbed into the Bunyouro-Kitara Kingdom before reasserting its independance in 1891. As with the kingdoms of Buganda, Busoga and Bunyoro, Under Milton Obote’s first Presidency (1966 – 1971), the Tooro Kingdom was abolished in 1967 and wasn’t reinstated until 1993.

There are about 70 district clans with in the Tooro Kingdom (according to the 1999 constitution), but of these only about 20 clans are considered to be active within the Tooro Kingdom. These clans include the; Abalisa, Abibiito, Abagweri, Ababbopi and Abasumbi clans among many others. The Batooro people are proud of their kingdom.
