Kibale National Park, located just southeast of Fort Portal, is internationally recognized for having the highest density of primates in Africa, including over 1,500 chimpanzees. This lush tropical rainforest also shelters 12 other primate species such as the L’Hoest’s monkey, red colobus, and black-and-white colobus.
The park’s most popular activity is chimpanzee trekking, where visitors follow experienced guides into the forest to observe these intelligent primates in their natural habitat. Bird watchers will also find paradise here, with over 375 species recorded, including the African pitta and green-breasted pitta.
In addition to guided forest walks, visitors can explore the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-based conservation project that supports local livelihoods and biodiversity. Kibale is not only a primate sanctuary but a model of sustainable ecotourism and conservation.
