Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru – The Legendary Caves

Just 10 kilometers from Fort Portal lie the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves, a geological wonder wrapped in deep folklore. These stalactite-filled caves are named after a local legend about Nyina Mwiru, the daughter of King Bukuku, whose tragic story of disobedience, exile, and transformation into rock formations continues to be told today.

According to local oral history, the “Amabere” (literally “breasts”) are believed to have dripped milk for her abandoned child. Scientifically, the formations are natural calcium carbonate deposits, but they still draw spiritual and cultural reverence from locals and visitors alike.

The surrounding site also includes crater lakes, a cascading waterfall, and hiking trails, making it an excellent spot for nature lovers, photographers, and cultural tourists. Guided tours provide both mythological and geological insights, making the experience both educational and memorable.
